Leclerc too optimistic and giving up: “We had to take risks”

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) wanted to make up for his team's tactical blunder on Saturday during qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. In the end, the Monegasque did not even see the checkered flag because his sense of attack was a little too optimistic.

Qualified in 16th place (but promoted to 15th place thanks to the penalty inflicted on Antonio Giovinazzi), the Scuderia driver began a spectacular comeback in the soft underbelly of the peloton. Its overtaking Romain Grosjean (Haas) for the gain of 12th position particularly left its mark, even if the Frenchman belched on the radio: “It’s kamikaze.”

Unfortunately, this gesture was not likely to be repeated. Trying an identical attack on Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), Charles Leclerc touched the inside rail at Rascasse with its right rear wheel. The puncture then turned into a tire explosion, which resulted in damage to the flat bottom of the car. There was no longer any point in continuing the race.

" It was not easy, recognizes Charles Leclerc. The main problem came from our location on the grid. I had to take risks, perhaps a little too much on my part. When we started 15th in Monaco, I knew it was going to be complicated and that it was not going to be an easy day.

I had done the same (maneuver) on Romain a little earlier, I had a little less space with Nico and unfortunately we hit the wall. This caused a puncture and the tire came off. This damaged the flat bottom. »

Charles Leclerc, however, does not want to let himself be defeated. “It’s a weekend to forget, apart from the support I received here. It warmed my heart. We will bounce back in Montreal (Canada, location of the next race in two weeks. Editor’s note). »
