The arrival of the 6l V1.6 turbo/hybrid was greeted with reservation by a large part of the public and the paddock of the F1. The Power Units indeed offer a much quieter noise than the old V8s. The situation is such that Bernie Ecclestone is seeking by all means to replace this engine from 2017.
In the meantime, the first winter tests in Jerez made it possible to study the cars for the 2015 season. The first reports seem positive since performances are on the rise. But the noise also seems more present.
“We talked about it on the pit wall.”, commented Andy Cowell, director of the Engines division of Mercedes, in Speed Week. “We haven’t done any measurements to see if the motors are noisier because we’re only focused on making them more efficient. Maybe it’s because we haven’t heard any for a few months or maybe it’s because of the acoustics in Jerez, but it’s true that they seem noisier."
