The FIA was quick to take action following the accident suffered by Romain Grosjean at the Bahrain Grand Prix last Sunday.
The Frenchman escaped almost miraculously from an incredible collision with the safety rail of turn 3 measured at 53G and 221 km/h. Under the effect of the collision, its Haas was cut in two and caught fire, while the survival cell tore through the security barrier.
After several unsuccessful attempts, Grosjean managed to escape the blaze and only suffered a sprained left ankle, burned hands, and bruises on his left side.
Ahead of the Sakhir Grand Prix this weekend (December 4-6), the protection systems at the Bahrain International Circuit have been modified as follows:
- 2 rows of tires were installed on the right side of the track between turns 3 and 4
- The tire wall on the right in turn 9 has been lengthened and its thickness increased to 4 rows
- The curb on the right between turns 8 and 9 will be removed to prevent cars from launching on it
These changes were made in compliance with Article 5 of the conditions for issuing the FIA license for circuits. All configurations of the Bahrain international circuit thus retain federal grade 1, an essential key to welcoming the F1.
