Lewis Hamilton alternated between the worst and the best on the first day of testing in Melbourne. After a breakdown during his installation lap, the Briton finished with the best time of the day.

Lewis Hamilton went through all the emotions during the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix, but the day ended in any case on a positive sign for Mercedes who achieved the best times with his two W05s. The first session, however, got off to a bad start for the 2008 world champion who encountered an oil pressure problem requiring a complete change of the engine block. After hard work from the team, the Briton was able to return to the track for the second session of the day and set the best time (1'29"625) ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg, not without completing 37 laps of the track. .
