Less than 24 hours after the FIA's decision, the first criticisms are already starting to rain down. As a reminder, the international body decided to take into consideration the complaints of drivers after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and published a circular which aims to regulate porpoising on the single-seaters on the grid. We learn in this that a porpoising threshold which would be considered acceptable will be defined, “ based on the vertical acceleration of the car, which will give a quantitative limit to the acceptable level of vertical oscillations. »

This positioning of the FIA is not to the taste of the entire paddock. Max Verstappen was quick to react. “ I think it's a little disappointing that there's a mid-season rule change again, I would say, explains the Batavian to Racer. It's not even about affecting us more or less than other teams, but it shouldn't be that one team complains a lot and suddenly then they change the rules around it. »

Teams must fix problem themselves for Max Verstappen

This " team that complains a lot ", even if he does not name it, it is most certainly Mercedes who has been actively fighting since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for a position taken by the FIA. The German team finally won its case even though it is one of the teams most impacted by porpoising. With their aerodynamic concept, the Silver Arrows made a choice before the start of the season which resulted in them bouncing enormously on the straights.

« I think there are a lot of teams that have done an incredible job of not having these kinds of issues, so it's possible to work around them, says Max Verstappen. If you raise your car, you won't have these problems, but you will lose performance. But if you can't design the car properly for that, then it's your fault, it's not the regulations' fault. For me, it's a bit of a shame. »

While in Baku, porpoising was highlighted, the intensity of this phenomenon depends on the tuning of the cars and the configuration of the tracks. This is why Max Verstappen would have preferred to let the teams correct this design flaw themselves. “ Of course, every circuit is different, too, but I think it's a bit of a shame to change it mid-season and the teams have clearly shown that you can drive normally, or at least with much less problems than some other teams », recalls the world champion. While Red Bull should not be greatly impacted by this decision by the FIA, the 2022 championship could well take a turn this weekend in Montreal.
