The sprint format is being used for the second time in this 2022 season. After the three tests in 2021 at Silverstone, Monza and Interlagos and at Imola this season, it is Austria which hosts this 100km race contested on Saturday.

Like last year, the classification of this race will serve as the starting grid for this Sunday. However, some modifications should be noted. This concerns in particular the points scale, since it is now the first eight who will be rewarded, with a jackpot of eight points for the winner. The latter will no longer be credited as the official pole sitter of the weekend, this honor going to the driver who dominated Friday qualifying.

He is the reigning champion Max Verstappen who will start in pole position in this sprint race. The Dutchman of Red Bull outstripped both Ferrari de Charles Leclerc et Carlos Sainz. Behind them, despite his accident in Q3, we find George Russell. The pilot Mercedes took advantage of Sergio Pérez's penalty to move up one place. After his laps in Q3 were canceled for having crossed the track limits in Q2, the Mexican plunged to 13th place.

The third and fourth rows are occupied by Haas et Alpine. Esteban Ocon leads this group to 5th place while Fernando Alonso brings him up in 8th position. Behind the Spaniard, we find the other Mercedes driver who had a complicated Q3, Lewis Hamilton. The German team's mechanics had time to carry out the repairs and the Briton was able to drive for around ten minutes during FP2.

On the tricolor side, Pierre Gasly, despite the difficulties of its car at the Red Bull Ring, managed to climb to 10th place on the Sprint Race grid. But the Frenchman will have to be wary of the return of Sergio Pérez who will try everything to be best placed tomorrow at the start of the Austrian Grand Prix.

The two big disappointments this Friday remain McLaren et Aston Martin. One Lando Norris managed to get into Q2, the Briton was ultimately never in the rhythm (15th). Daniel Ricciardo was once again dominated by his teammate (16th). For Sebastien Hag (20e) and Lance stroll (17th), the qualifying exercise definitely does not favor them and it is the German who brings up the rear in Austria.
