McLaren expects to suffer at Monza

After a difficult weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, McLaren expects a again for the Italian Grand Prix. The Honda engine will be put to the test in the long straights that make up the Monza track, which would almost discourage Fernando Alonso even before the first tests.

« We have always said that this circuit does not suit us, and we expect a difficult challenge, explains the Spaniard. Even though it is as demanding on the engine as Spa, the two [circuits] are very different. Spa is a long race while the Monza track is short and you can very quickly get the impression that the race is over. »

Less defeatist than his teammate, Stoffel vandoorne is also expecting a difficult final European weekend but is keen to take up the challenge.

“Spa was a really tough race for us, and we always described Belgium and Italy as very tough weekends, adds the Belgian. It was difficult to keep pace with the rest of the grid on the straights, and we expect the same thing at Monza. But we will obviously do our best every day to give ourselves the best chance of achieving a good result. »

Since the passage of the engine Mercedes with a Honda engine, McLaren no longer returned to the points in the Temple of Speed and had a best result of 12e place of Jenson Button in 2016.
