Mercedes in its garden at Silverstone

This year, employees at the headquarters Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team in Brackley will not be able to attend the free practice sessions as usual, due to Covid-19. If they listen closely, they could well hear the cries of joy from the German team, around ten kilometers further on.

Indeed, Mercedes is making its home at Silverstone. In addition to the geographical proximity to its headquarters, it monopolizes victories on English soil. She has won six of the last seven editions with two cars on the podium each time, including three doubles. Lewis Hamilton is also the record holder for victories on the British track, with five successes.

“We feel at home” recognize Toto wolff, the main team. “We had very good results, but we all know the quote from Babe Ruth (famous interwar baseball player Editor’s note):  “Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games.” There is no guarantee of a good result because you have performed well in the past. »

Currently, Mercedes dominates the championship head and shoulders after three races. Lewis Hamilton leads his teammate by five points Bottas and thirty Max Verstappen. They are 66 points ahead in the manufacturers’ standings over Red Bull.

"We had a good start to the season: we resolved the problems that troubled us the first weekend, won three races out of three and scored a good number of points. Toto Wolff is satisfied. But he fears reliability problems.

“The first three races also underlined a crucial factor, the importance of reliability in this shortened season. We are one of only two teams to have finished every race with two cars and we know that a retirement can wipe out our lead. »

Mercedes has never suffered a retirement at Silverstone since its official return in 2010.
