Some are curious like Pierre Gasly, other skeptics like Lewis Hamilton… one thing is certain, the new weekend format does not leave anyone indifferent. For its grand premiere, the sprint race will begin at Silverstone next week, during the British Grand Prix. Race director Michael Masi warns: if things don't work out as they should, there will be change!
“There may be changes in the future if something doesn't work, admits the Australian. We will take stock after Silverstone of what was and what was not. Everyone is open to us making changes in the future. The goal is to find the best possible format. This is why we are testing sprint qualification this season.”
The Australian race director insists that all those involved in the F1 had their say in the process of creating this new format.
“We had a lot of meetings to try to come out with the best possible format. Everyone was involved in the process, from the team sporting directors to the FIA and F1. Everyone had to read the rules and report a possible problem.”
Furthermore, the FIA announced that sprint races would not be organized at the end of the season if they were to have a role in the awarding of the title. One wonders if the FIA has not forgotten that the calendar has 23 races and that the sprint race at Silverstone could have an obvious impact on the title race between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
