Revised engine, increased aero downforce: the 2020 Ferrari will evolve

Renowned for its top speed, which allowed Charles Leclerc to triumph in particular at Spa and Monza, the SF90 however cruelly lacked aerodynamic downforce, making the car Italian more delicate to take to the level of Mercedes over the entire past season.

Maranello understood that a rebalancing was necessary on the basic concept. During the trans brand’s end-of-year mealalpine, Mattia Binotto, head of Ferrari Sports Management, made no secret of the fact that changes were coming in 2020.

“The Power Unit will be extensively revised, even from an architectural point of view, in particular in its upper part, at the level of the cylinders, comments Binotto, quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport. Despite the stability of the regulations since 2014, we believe that there is still much to be done.

The theme of weight this year, and even more so next year, is critical I believe for all teams. »

Aero will also be in the sights of Scuderia Ferrari engineers. “The single-seater will be based on what we learned this year, so it’s a car that will be born with a lot more downforce than today, but also with a lot more drag, continues Binotto.

We don't expect that next year we will have the fastest car on the straights concept-wise. I'm not saying we will copy others, but we will adapt to what we have now seen about how the tires behave. »

Tires which will remain identical to those of 2019, after the unanimous rejection of the teams to have the Pirelli version 2020 which were not satisfactory.
