Mercedes identified the cause of the problem which prevented Valtteri Bottas to reach the finish during the previous Eifel Grand Prix.
The Finn had to give up after around twenty laps due to an alert on the MGU-H of his power unit.
After analysis and inspection, Étoile engineers discovered the presence of a defective electrical component in the Electronic Control, one of the 6 main parts of current hybrid thrusters with the internal combustion engine (ICE), both MGU (K and H), the turbocharger, and the battery.
« Data shows rapid removal of car avoided greater damage to Valtteri Power Unit », explained the main team Toto wolff earlier in the week.
Bottas and his teammate Lewis Hamilton have therefore received new elements for the Portuguese Grand Prix (October 23-25). None incurs a penalty on the grid because the annual allocations have not yet been exceeded.
« We have also made adjustments to the calibration of the new modules so that the Nürburgring scenario does not repeat itself. », Specified a Mercedes spokesperson.
