No cockpit protection system in 2017

2017 will not see the arrival of cockpit protection for single-seaters in F1. This was decided by the Strategic Group of the discipline, made up of the six teams Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, Williams, McLaren and Force India, the FIA and the FOM.

If such a system were to be put in place from the next season, the F1 governing bodies preferred to delay its arrival. “It has been decided that due to the relatively short lead time before the 2017 Formula One season, it would be prudent to use the remainder of this year and early next year to further evaluate the potential of all options before final confirmation. This involves conducting several on-track Halo system free tests throughout the remainder of this season and during the first part of the 2017 season."

The famous Halo, seen in tests at Ferrari and Red Bull, was the preference of the FIA but other options still remain open. Red Bull notably presented an alternative solution with its Aeroscreen. "While Halo is currently the preferred option, the consensus within the Strategy Group was that another year of development could lead to an even more complete solution. The halo remains a strong option for introduction in 2018.”

The FIA has indeed confirmed that 2018 will be the year to introduce a cockpit protection system, whether it be Halo or any other device.
