Pérez: McLaren will need time

McLaren little by little manages to improve its MP4-28, but the British team is still far from the pace of the top teams. If Jenson Button and Sergio Pérez managed to finish in the points during the last two Grands Prix, they are not able to show the pace at the top of the ranking. However, the Woking team is keeping its head high and will fight to get back to the forefront even if the chances of a title have already become almost non-existent. “The goal for us is to win one or two races.”, recognized the Mexican who certainly hoped for more when arriving in his new team. “We know there’s no way to think about it right now, but we’re doing our best. It’s very encouraging for me to see everyone working so hard. No one gives up even if we are not in the position we would like while fighting for success. »

At the end of next month, McLaren will contest its national Grand Prix at Silverstone which will follow the Canadian GP. With the best result this year being a fifth place for Jenson Button in Shanghai and a sixth position for Sergio Pérez in Bahrain, the prospects still remain realistic for the next events. “We're going to have a lot of some races. We were still very far away in Barcelona. You never know but I expect a few more challenges before the situation changes. But it's difficult to say if we will be on the podium of the British Grand Prix because we still seem too far away at the moment. But McLaren is a superb team that works hard. A podium (at Silverstone) would satisfy me and then we could aim for victories. »

McLaren was still in the soft underbelly of the peloton during the first day of free practice for the Monaco Grand Prix. Jenson Button set the seventh time while Checo finished 12th, more than 1”6 behind the reference time set by Nico Rosberg.
