Pirelli is not going to be idle this winter. The manufacturer of the Formula 1 will carry out additional tests with several teams in December and February 2023. The objective is to finalize the development of slick, intermediate and rain tires for next season. The 2022 single-seaters will be used to carry out these tests.

The first test will take place on the Paul-Ricard circuit from December 3 to 4 with Alfa Romeo, on a wet track to test the rain and intermediate tires. Two days later, on December 6 and 7, it will be the turn of Ferrari to ride on his own Fiorano track, always on a wet track. Alpha Tauri will then test the slick tires in Portimão on December 14 and 15.

No test is planned for January, but three teams will once again take to the track from February 2023. Paul-Ricard will host Mercedes on February 1 and 2 to run with slick tires before AlphaTauri takes over on February 3 and 4 to use rain tires. Finally, Aston Martin will join Mercedes in Jerez on February 7 and 8 for further testing on slick tires.

Important tests for Pirelli concerning rain tires

Only half of the 10 F1 teams will therefore participate in these winter tests. “We asked the availability of each team, and some of them responded, explained Simone Berra, Pirelli's F1 chief engineer. We will mainly work on intermediates and rains. For us, this is the best time of year to test in cold weather and representative conditions. And then we will even have some tests for the slicks for the new specification for 2024.”

Pirelli will therefore complete the acquisition of data on its 2023 tires, after first full-scale tests in Austin and Mexico. The Italian manufacturer will also be able to test its wet track tires, which have been widely criticized recently. Following the episode of the Suzuka Grand Prix, the performance of rain tires designed by Pirelli for extreme conditions has recently been the subject of discussion. In its investigation, the FIA explained that “Analysis of the performance of the tires in wet weather is underway between the FIA technical department and the official tire manufacturer. »
