Pirelli: Testing at Hockenheim will be crucial

Pirelli opted for its softest tires for Hockenheim as the supplier of the discipline had done in Austria. If the weather can always hold surprises, the latest forecasts suggest that the track will remain dry this weekend. The main concern of the Italian manufacturer concerns its lack of knowledge on this circuit since the last trip was made in 2012 when the old regulations were in force.

“It?s a pleasure to be back at Hockenheim, but the workload – for the teams and for ourselves – will be greater, because the only concrete data collected with F1 are two years old. Single-seaters and tires were very different then”, underlined Paul Hembery, Pirelli sporting director. “ Free practice will therefore play an extremely important role because the teams will have to gather as much information as possible. We have never been here before with the super softs, but as we have collected as much data as possible with this mixture this season, we believe that it is perfectly suited to the various constraints of this Hockenheim track, once considered to be one of the fastest in the world before being modified in 2002. By Friday afternoon, we should have a clearer idea of the number of stops we should expect. »
