Pirelli will not test its prototype tires this weekend

Teams will not test Pirelli's prototype development tires during the second free practice session for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. F1 this weekend at Silverstone, as reported by the trans entityalpine before the test.

Mario Isola, head of the Italian manufacturer, indicated this change of program in the wake of the puncture affair that occurred during the British Grand Prix last weekend.

For this event, Pirelli will rely on its initial choice of softer tires, with higher pressures to reduce the risk of problems, and the non-holding of prototype tests will therefore give the teams more time to work on these envelopes.

" At this moment, the test session in Barcelona is confirmed » However, specifies Isola, the teams must then have half an hour in Catalonia with the Italian development tires.

Tires on which possible small adjustments could occur for next year, in order to offer the most adequate tire possible, despite the basic architecture dating from 2019.

“We have the same product on the 2020 cars and the plan is to keep them for 2021 as well, and that is something we need to consider in order to decide if we need to evolve the product for next year, Isola comments.

We are going to work on new ideas and new constructions to try to limit the increase in pressure, because we know that an increase in pressure has the consequence of also increasing overheating for example, this is something that drivers don't want to.

In 2021 we can't do much because of the limited number of tests, we just have the opportunity to validate some ideas, but we will definitely do something for the future. »

2022 must indeed see a profound change in terms of tires, with the arrival of 18″ wheels, already present in the FIA F2.
