Pirelli announces its conclusions in the puncture case

Rather boring, if not completely boring, the British Grand Prix took a completely different turn in the last three laps. While everything was going well on the side of Mercedes, the two German single-seaters suffered a puncture on the left front.

Lewis Hamilton saved his skin while Valtteri Bottas fell from 2nd to 11th position. On the side of McLaren, Carlos Sainz suffered the same fate and crossed the finish line in a sad 13th place while he was fighting for 5th a lap before.

In the crosshairs of all the teams, Pirelli, tire supplier to the paddock, immediately opened an investigation to find out the origin of these punctures. After a few days of investigation, the manufacturer delivered its verdict.

The cause of these three punctures was a longer stint than usual, Pirelli said in a press release on Tuesday. The entry of the safety car for the second time in the race forced the teams to bring their drivers through the pits earlier than expected and forcing them to complete the remaining three-quarters of the event with the same set of tires (approximately 40 turns).

Suicide on a track like Silverstone which especially puts a strain on the left front of the single-seaters. Concerning the accident of Daniil Kvyat, propelled against the wall after losing control of his Alpha Tauri, the trans firmalpine did not announce anything.

For the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Pirelli will offer the C2, C3 and C4 components which will be a little softer than those used in the first round at Silverstone. Their pressure will be slightly increased. Will punctures be avoided this time? Answer this Sunday.
