Pirelli wants optimal conditions for its tests

While Pirelli has extended its contract for three additional seasons beyond 2016, the Italian manufacturer is preparing for the future technical regulations implemented in 2017 which should offer more powerful, wider single-seaters generating more aerodynamic downforce. The supplier of the F1 will begin its tests on Monday January 25 and Tuesday January 26 at Paul-Ricard (Var) where Ferrari, McLaren et Red Bull will test rain tires.

“The main drivers are really pushing things to the highest level. This is why they are world champions. We want the best car, the most extreme conditions and the best drivers behind the wheel to get their feedback”, commented Paul Hembery, the sporting director of Pirelli, quoted by Reuters. “We are very focused on 2017 because there will be significant changes and we want to be able to provide the best products to the teams. »

Pirelli will have six two-day testing sessions in 2016 to fine-tune its tires, despite the season's very busy schedule which includes 21 Grands Prix. “We believe we are moving in the right direction following the last technical meeting”, said Paul Hembery. “We want to do tests in June. It's not easy to put in place, but we need to make our plans very quickly. We can do it, but current products are not suitable. If the loads on the tire increase by 60%, it will not only be necessary to change the structure but also the components. This requires a very intense testing schedule which is probably unrealistic with the time available. »
