2011 tires: Michelin, Avon' and Pirelli

Michelin against Avon, the match was clearly unbalanced. 215 Grands Prix and 102 victories on one side, 17 races and no success on the other. But, now, Pirelli clearly announces its candidacy and it is a significant manufacturer (44 victories in F1) who launches into battle. The Italian firm will present an offer at the end of next week, in order to beat Michelin, in pole position, and Avon, which has the advantage of offering an inexpensive solution.

« Pirelli announces that it will present an offer to equip all Formula 1 World Championship teams with tires », Announces the company. “ This offer will be presented after the next Formula 1 Grand Prix in Spain on May 9. » A Pirelli spokesperson made it clear that this offer was indeed valid for the next season but that no other details could be revealed at the moment.

Last week, Pirelli expressed its interest in joining Formula 1 but, given the short time the company had to make a proposal, the 2012 season seemed more targeted. And if the application is now official, Pirelli is demanding some special conditions, such as a monopoly on the supply of tires, and the transition to 18-inch rims, an idea also desired by Michelin.

It will also be necessary to review the calendar since it was during the Spanish Grand Prix, at the end of which Pirelli will make its offer, that the 2011 manufacturer(s) was to be chosen. The choice of the next tire supplier should therefore probably be postponed to the Monaco Grand Prix (May 14-16), or even the Turkish Grand Prix (May 28-30).
