Why will Racing Point not have to redesign its brake ducts?

In the wake of the verdict inflicting the loss of 15 points in the Manufacturers' championship and 400 euros in fines at Racing Point, Nikolas Tombazis, technical manager of the department car of the FIA, wanted to clarify certain points.

“The question was whether Racing Point designed its brake ducts itself because they are part of the listed parts which define the quality of “builder” of a team. If in 2019 it was legitimate to exchange information on scoops, it is no longer permitted this year and it has been shown that Racing Point did not design these parts.

In doing so, it contravened Appendix 6 of the sporting regulations which stipulates that all manufacturers must use the parts listed. As a result, the stewards imposed a sporting penalty, the question being not whether the component is legal but whether the design process is. »

The difference is significant because it does not force Racing Point to review its brake designs.

" He is impossible to ask Racing Point to forget its knowledge and draw a totally different room, continues the FIA man. A part design always relies on existing knowledge, and it would not be reasonable to ask them to create new parts. And it's difficult for us to assess whether they are different enough! »

Today, the priority is to define what the word “design” means because, beyond the brake ducts of the Racing Point, this is the path that we want to give to the F1 who is at stake.

“There has been a lot of discussion between the FIA and F1 in recent weeks because it will be important to explain what we intend to do about thishe concludes. We do not want the primary capacity of a team to be that of copying and we are planning adjustments to the 2021 regulations in the short term. We will continue toaccept that some parts are copied but certainly not the whole car »

FIA resolutions are expected in the coming weeks…
