Rémi Taffin: “We worked on every little detail”

Next year, the V6 Turbos will replace the current V8s, present on the track since 2006. An important turning point in the history of the Formula 1, which will require significant work from engine manufacturers. However, as Rémi Taffin, director of track services for the diamond brand, explains, it will be necessary to continue working on the V8s, which also equip nearly a third of the current field (Red Bull, Lotus, Caterham, Williams): “Naturally, the operating window to explore narrows year after year. Of course, we continue to adapt to changes in regulations, to study all areas in which we can improve engine performance and our service to the customer. We need to be more efficient in every compartment. It is in the area of reliability that we can improve the most. We have worked on every little detail and every procedure to get closer to maximum quality. »

Reliability, which was lacking several times last year, particularly with the alternators, was worked on this winter: “On the technical side, we worked all winter to resolve the problems that caused us problems in 2012. It showed us that, even during a period of frozen development, it is not that easy, even by changing several components. It's the difference between maximizing performance by changing the specification every race, and improving reliability in freezing conditions. We must be careful to always provide maximum consistency in the production of these parts. »
