Renault and Briatore fight back

Renault is at the center of all discussions at Monza, relegating the sport to the background. After the publication of the letter sent by Nelson Piquet Jr to the FIA, in which he specifically accused Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds of having asked him to make a mistake during the Singapore Grand Prix in 2008, Renault reacted. The Franco-British team, via a press release, expressed its desire to take the matter to court.

« The FIA has announced that it will hold an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council (“WMSC”) on September 21, 2009. The ING Renault team F1 Team will participate in this meeting and respond to allegations that members of the team colluded with Nelson Piquet Junior to deliberately cause an accident during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, prompting the release of the safety car at benefit of Fernando Alonso.

To date, the ING Renault F1 Team has not wished to speak publicly on the subject during the FIA's preliminary investigation.

However, the ING Renault F1 Team and its General Manager Flavio Briatore in a personal capacity, wish to declare that they have launched criminal action against Nelson Piquet Junior and Nelson Piquet Senior with the Paris public prosecutor's office for slanderous denunciation and attempted aggravated blackmail in the aim of allowing Mr. Piquet Junior to keep his driver's seat within the team until the end of the 2009 season. These facts will also be the subject of a procedure with the English police. »
