Renault: the Power Unit should be more reliable

Despite hopes at the start of the season to make up for lost time Mercedes, Renault Sport F1 experienced difficult weekends with a lack of competitiveness from its Power Unit supported by strong pressure from its customer Red Bull.

The 3-week break between Bahrain and Barcelona, where the Spanish GP will be held this Sunday, May 10, allowed Renault Sport F1 to progress in the development of its 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6.

“We will have (…) a modified version of our thruster in Barcelona, which should offer us greater reliability and better “driveability” (flexibility)”, says Remi Taffin, the operations director of Losange.

The nature of Barcelona circuit also seems to reassure the Renault Sport F1 engineer. “It's a much more classic circuit compared to those covered so far this season. The route is much more fluid... quite moderate in terms of the constraints exerted on the Power Unit, which must therefore be efficient at all levels”, specifies the engineer Viruses-Châtillon.
