Ricciardo and his tire tactics: “Mediums were the best option”

For a time, we believed that Renault would appear in third place qualifying for the 70th anniversary Grand Prix F1 in Silverstone (Great Britain). Daniel Ricciardo stood out with a time on medium tires, where his opponents were on soft tires after the first run.

Alas for the Yellows and Blacks, Nico Hulkenberg (Racing Point) then Max Verstappen( Red Bull) were going to drive faster than the Australian. Never mind, the former student of the Red Bull industry was very satisfied to start fifth!

“It was great! Finishing in the top 5 makes me very happy. My result from Free Practice 2 (3rd behind Mercedes) made everyone excited. But frankly, I didn't expect at all to finish in such a position in qualifying, even if it didn't come far.

As I announced yesterday, the wind has completely changed direction. It's like driving on a different circuit, because the balance of the car has changed. But all my qualifying rounds satisfied me. »

The poker move attempted by Renault almost paid. Indeed, Daniel Ricciardo was using medium tires in Q3, which were supposed to be less efficient than the soft tires!

“In Q1, I ran on soft tires, and I was quite satisfied with it. The plan was to use the mediums in Q2 and on my first lap with these tires, I gained eight tenths. They were easier to use, the car was happier on mediums.

“The times came without forcing too much, whereas with the soft ones, you had to fight more. Mediums were the best option,” He said.

On Sunday, the wearer of number 3 will have a lot to do to bring back big points for the Losange, but the hopes are high. “Max. (Steps) should benefit from better pace in the race, but he will have to start with the hard tires.

It may be promising but it may also not work for him. He could isolate himself but I think Nico (Hülkenberg) could be a prime target tomorrow. »
