Russell 'not interested in fighting for last place'

George Russell did what he could with his guns. If Williams experienced one of its worst starts to the season in a long time, the reigning champion of the F2 did well by beating his teammate Robert Kubica in qualifying and the race.

However, the Briton is not happy with the result since he failed in penultimate position two laps behind the winner Valtteri Bottas.

“I can only compare myself to my teammate, explained the rookie quoted on the official F1 website. I'm not disappointed that I wasn't able to fight at the front, but I'm not interested in fighting for last place. I left the circuit with my head held high on Saturday. I didn't have a fair duel against Robert because he was damaged at the start. It was just a matter of both of us bringing the car back to the finish in order to learn as much as possible. »

George Russell nevertheless scored points in the eyes of observers and his team by not making any major mistakes on the demanding Melbourne circuit where the first steps are difficult.

“I didn't hit any walls or anything for my first time at Albert Park. I was in front of my teammate during all sessions except for one. I'm satisfied personally, but I remain a fighter, a winner, and I don't worry about the internal struggle at the back of the peloton. I can only be satisfied with having accomplished most of my objectives here”, added the Briton.
