Sainz criticizes Baku restarts

Since the 2017 edition, the safety car line on the Baku track has been located at turn no. 20, in the middle of the two-kilometer straight line characteristic of the track. Carlos Sainz strongly criticized this choice of the FIA.

« The most dangerous part of the race was probably at the restart, explains the Spaniard. The leaders were waiting for the safety car line to start and so they went fast then slow. For the guys at the back, we are always in the corners with walls and we can't see through them if they are going fast or slow.

Suddenly we go full throttle into sixth, seventh gear before crashing again. For me, it becomes dangerous. »

Apart from the incident between Sebastian Vettel et Lewis Hamilton the 20e round of the Grand Prix, restarts had already caused problems in GP2 in 2016 where Nobuharu Matsushita (ART GP) received a weekend of suspension for dangerous behavior as leader of the restart.

« I hope that for next year, the FIA will review where to place the safety car line. I think they should put it at turn 16 from where everyone is flat out because you can't be fast, then slow, then accelerate and tailgate. »

After his spin at the first corner, Carlos Sainz finished 8e of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
