Sebastian Vettel: “A little more competitive”

6th on a dry track this morning in EL1, Sebastian Vettel was one of the most reckless drivers in the afternoon in the Hungarian rain. Until signing the chronometric reference of the session with a car Ferrari SF1000 who seems a little more at ease on the Budapest turnstile than during the first two outings of the Red Bull ring.

“We did more laps than others in the wet, because after the weaknesses we showed last week we need to understand the car better, explains the four-time German world champion.

We need laps to gain confidence with the car. It's no secret that there is still a lot of work to be done, but overall, we seem to be a little more competitive. »

There is no doubt that Maranello is looking to the sky for the next two days, the rain being able to even out the peloton a little more on a track where engine performance, the Achilles heel of the transalpine block this season, is of lesser importance compared to Austria.

But despite the performance on a wet track, optimism is also in order at Ferrari in view of the tests in dry conditions. “The weather looks changeable in the next few days, but if it's dry like Austria it will be good because we were also good this morning”, recalls Vettel.

Leclerc lacking confidence

For the Monegasque driver, the performances of his teammate give reason for hope with a view to qualifying and the race, he who did not seem to find the same good formula on a wet track.

“In the rain we struggled a bit because we tested a few things and I wasn't very happy because I lacked a bit of confidence in the wet, but we saw some positive signs this morning. » says the former Sauber driver.

And when Lewis Hamilton, dominant in free practice 1, expects to see the peloton tighten up tomorrow, we hope to see the SF1000s back in the game with the Red Bull RB16s, or even the Racing Point RP20s, also in good spirits this morning.
