Sergio Pérez will leave Racing Point at the end of 2020

It’s a surprise that isn’t really one: Sergio Perez will not be part of the adventure Aston Martin in 2021.

After seven years in the Force India structure then Racing Point, The Mexican will leave the Silverstone team at the end of the season. “In life, everything has a beginning and an end,” he explained in a message posted on social media. My time with the team is coming to an end.

It hurts a little because I relied on the team during very difficult periods and we always managed to overcome obstacles and I am very proud to have saved the jobs of several of my teammates. »

The Mexican can legitimately feel wronged and disappointed, he who led to the forced administration of a Force India team in mid-2018 to better save it by favoring the takeover by the Lawrence consortium Stroll, who unsurprisingly placed his son Lance there the following season. As he prepared to reap the fruits of his labor by piloting the best car of his career, Pérez must pack up.

The first rumors of his replacement by a certain Sebastian Vettel, departing from Ferrari, appeared around the last Hungarian Grand Prix. Pérez, however, had a contract with Racing Point, which will become Aston Martin next year, until 2022.

After blowing hot and cold on the transfer market, Otmar Szafnauer, CEO of Racing Point, recently indicated that the team's future line-up was complete, implied with Pérez and Stroll, who has certainly raised his level of performance. game this season but does not offer the same experience nor the same guarantees as the Mexican veteran.

The latter clarified that he had no plan B: “My ambition is to continue racing in Formula 1, but it depends on the possibility of finding a project that motivates me to give 100% at every turn,” he clarified. We imagine that his profile could appeal to a team like Haas for example, without forgetting that Pérez began his career with Sauber, which became Alfa Romeo ces dernières années.

On the Racing Point side, eyes will now naturally turn towards Vettel, with an announcement expected quickly.
