Steiner: Lauda got me started in F1

A little more than 24 hours after the announcement of the death of Niki Lauda, emotions are running high in the paddock F1, which set up its big marquee near the principality of Monaco this week.

The Austrian, crowned in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari, then in 1984 at McLaren, passed away at the age of 70 last Monday, leaving behind an immense achievement, coupled with a formidable life lesson. He who survived the flames of the Green Hell of the Nürburgring after a terrible accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix only to return to the wheel less than five weeks later.

« This is obviously sad news that I learned when I arrived in Munich from the United States yesterday morning, commented Steiner from Monte Carlo. We all knew he was unwell and in the hospital. We always hope that things like this don't happen but we knew he wasn't doing well.

His death doesn't just affect the world of F1 – we all know what his place is in the history of motorsport. Look at the front pages of newspapers around the world today and you will find Niki's portrait there, which shows to what extent her aura went beyond the purely sporting framework. It's a great loss ».

At the turn of the new millennium, Lauda, then head of the Jaguar Racing team, contributed to the recruitment of Steiner. A period of which the person concerned retains lovely memories.

« Besides the three-time world champion, I remember Lauda, the human being, the one who got me started in Formula 1, added the Italian manager. Without him, maybe I wouldn't be here today. I always had a great relationship with Niki, even after I stopped working for him. The last time we spoke was during his birthday in February, when he celebrated his 70th birthday.

I am very proud to have had the privilege of working under his orders. He was a great guy who knew the mysteries of sport, the political aspect, the financial aspect. He's one of the first guys to have an airline named after him! Pretty cool, right?

With Niki, you left with memories every day. He followed no rules, no predefined pattern. He did things his way. From the Jaguar days, I still have many good times in mind. We spent a lot of time together actually. Instead of going back to London, he would sometimes stay at my place during the week and we would both end up watching TV ».

Steiner also remembers and salutes the late champion's involvement when he was organizing the structure of what would become the team Haas

« He was very available and offered his help. And I might as well tell you that you open many more doors when you are Niki Lauda! ».
