At 58, the Briton is relinquishing his responsibilities within the FOM to assume the role of FIA sporting director. A transfer acclaimed by both entities, and which brings into the light one of the most experienced and respected members of the F1 paddock for thirty years.

Twice already the role of Sporting Director had been offered to him by the FIA, and twice Steve Nielsen had refused.

This was after the death of FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting in 2019, and then after the dismissal of his replacement Michael Masi following the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix fiasco.

This time he accepted. For some, at the insistence of the FOM and the teams in order to put an end to the too many controversies which have affected the control operations during the Grands Prix.

If he can use all his experience of F1 to simplify the rules and above all make them more readable for the actors but also for the spectators, then he will have done his job well. Good luck, Milkman!
