Toto Wolff: “The FIA had no other choice for the Halo”

With the Shield tests, admittedly rather unsuccessful in view of the comments from Sebastian Vettel after his lap of the Silverstone track, we did not think that the Halo would just as quickly return to the forefront in F1.

However, this week, the FIA confirmed the introduction of the Halo system from 2018 on single-seaters. The international federation also had justified his choice yesterday, by revealing certain parameters determined during the tests carried out on this solution.

Toto wolff, questioned by fans in a question and answer published on the team's website Mercedes, commented on the FIA decision. « I think probably the FIA had no choice but to introduce the Halo, explains the Austrian.

It is up to the FIA to increase safety and they have looked at different systems. None of them really worked and the Halo was the one that gave the most satisfaction. I don't like the look of it – the aesthetic – but the decision has been made and now we have to make the most of it. »

This decision to install the Halo in 2018 does not seem to be very successful in the F1 paddock, since Niki Lauda, non-executive president of Mercedes, also criticized the device. Several drivers had also given a rather negative opinion on the system, the design of which will evolve before 2018, as confirmed by the FIA.
