A first point worth gold and a new record for Kubica

It is rare that a 10th place acquired at the end of a Grand Prix causes so much excitement for a team. Yet there was joy on the side of Williams when packing up the belongings in Hockenheim (Germany), during the night from Sunday to Monday.

Manhandled since the start of the season by his teammate George Russell (twice ahead of the Englishman in 11 races, always behind the rookie in qualifying), Robert Kubica managed to pick up a small point in the German rain. For this, the Pole counted in part on the exclusion of the two Alfa Romeos, initially classified seventh and eighth.

But that would be an insult to the former BMW-Sauber driver and Renault than to forget his merit. Unlike several opponents, the 2013 champion of WRC 2 held his mount on the track and made no mistakes. A hell of a performance for the survivor of a serious rally accident in February 2011 (right hand, right arm and right leg seriously affected).

“It was a crazy race and the conditions were very tricky, explained Robert Kubica. I managed to reach the finish without making a mistake. Even though running in the rain is nothing new to me, it has still been nine years since I last rode in such circumstances.. It refreshed my memory! »

Even stronger, the 34-year-old veteran set a new record in F1 : the longest wait between two arrivals at the points. Since the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which finished in fifth place, Eight years, eight months and 14 days have passed!

The previous holder of this record, the Belgian Lucien bianchi, had to wait seven years, eleven months and seven days between the Grands Prix of Belgium 1960 (sixth in a Cooper-Climax) and Monaco 1968 (third in a Cooper-BRM).
