Verstappen admits he “saw” Honda withdrawal coming

The Dutchman, however, specifies that he had extended with Red Bull until 2023 without knowing that the Japanese engine manufacturer would leave Formula 1 at the end of 2021.

Verstappen admits he “saw” Honda withdrawal coming

While Formula 1 has thrown its big marquee on the grounds of Mount Eifel (Germany), Honda's departure continues to animate conversations in the paddock. Mainly because the consequences for Red Bull could go beyond the loss of a factory engine.

We are of course thinking about the impact of such a withdrawal on the future of the star driver. Max Verstappen in Milton Keynes (United Kingdom).

How did the Dutchman react when he heard the news?

« I saw it coming, replied the person concerned from the Nürburgring. Obviously, I learned about it a little before the press release. It's a shame but we must understand and respect this choice. We will continue to attack and progress together.

It is not because they are going to leave the sport that they are going to slow down in terms of development. It's a pleasure to work with them. We have a great relationship and will give everything until the last race next year. I can't wait to try the new thruster they have planned to introduce in 2021 ».

Verstappen clarified that he was not aware of Honda's plans last winter when signing his extension with Red Bull Racing until 2023. A certain vagueness surrounds the contractual situation of the virtuoso Orange, in particular the possible presence of an exit clause linked to the engine supply.

Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing team principal, ensures that Honda's departure does not change Verstappen's status, while Dr Helmut Marko suggested among our German colleagues thatCar engine and sport, that there was indeed a clause but that it referred to a “ efficient engine » and not Honda specifically. Semantics in F1 are important.

The Dutch pilot repeatedly said he was “ focused only on this season and next », indirectly confirming that he would continue to defend the Red Bull colors in 2021.

Would he agree to a meeting with Renault beyond this horizon? “ The decision is not up to me so I am open to all possibilities, replied Verstappen. There are so many unknowns, with also a new technical regulation coming.

I'm just trying to drive as fast as possible. If possible with a rear engine. I don't want to end up like the Flintstones with a car that moves forward when you pedal. It would be quite physical (laughs).”
