Vettel snatches pole in Montreal, Ricciardo 4th

We were waiting for the Ferrari in Montreal, they have already responded in qualifying. At the end of a very clean final lap in Q3, Sebastian Vettel signs the 56th pole position of his career with a time of 1'10"240, a new lap record on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. The four-time world champion had not tasted the joys of pole position since Hockenheim last year.

The German will share the first row of the grid with the Mercedes de Lewis Hamilton. The Briton was on provisional pole before losing the best time in the final moments. The leader of the world championship, who fails more than two tenths behind Vettel, will be surrounded by two red single-seaters since Charles Leclerc hoists his SF90 into 3rd position.

Behind the leading trio, superb performance from Daniel Ricciardo since the Australian of Renault took 4th place, eight thousandths ahead of the Red Bull de Pierre Gasly. Spinning during his first attempt in Q3, Valtteri Bottas must be satisfied with a modest 6th time. The Finn precedes Nico Hulkenberg, which completes a great day for Renault.

The German also brings in his wake two other drivers powered by the Losange: Lando Norris, before Carlos Sainz. Kevin Magnussen finished 10th but did not take part in Q3 due to a spectacular accident at the very end of Q2. Note that the Ferraris and Mercedes will start with the Medium tires since the quartet managed to climb into the Top 10 of the qualifying session with these compounds.

The big surprise of Q2 came from the elimination of Max Verstappen, who was unable to complete his last flying lap due to a red flag being waved in the final moments of the session following violent contact for Magnussen. After hitting the famous Wall of Champions at the left rear, the Dane lost control of his Haas VF-19, which went to hit the opposite wall in a spin.

Verstappen, who was then in 11th place after also trying to advance to Q3 on the Medium tires, was unable to improve his time on the Softs due to the interruption. Small consolation for the Red Bull driver: he will be able to choose his tires at the start on Sunday.

Situated at the forefront in the wake of Magnussen, Romain Grosjean couldn't lower his mark either. The Frenchman sets the 15th fastest time, behind Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso), Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo), And Alexander albon (Toro Rosso), also eliminated in Q2.

Disappointment in Q1 for Canadian fans with the elimination of Racing Point's Sergio Pérez and the local hero Lance stroll. Slowed down by a hydraulic leak in EL3, the regional driver had to switch back to phase 1 of the Mercedes engine and stopped in Q1 for the 11th time in a row.

The Roses are accompanied in the cart by Kimi Räikkönen's Alfa Romeo – a first for the Finn since Austria 2015 – and the usual Williams, who continue to scour the bottom of the rankings.
