From one Grand Prix to another, the mood changes at McLaren. At a press conference on Saturday ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Zak Brown was questioned multiple times about the case Daniel Ricciardo. A few weeks after the British team boss's strong statements regarding the Australian's lack of performance, even going so far as to question his contract for 2023, Brown had a very different speech this time.

After Ricciardo's good result in Azerbaijan, the American director believes that it is up to the team to provide a good car for its driver. “Daniel had a good day yesterday (Friday) and he was good in Baku. We also need to produce a more efficient car” admits the McLaren boss.

“Daniel has already shown, like at Monza last year, that he can win races when you give him a car that suits his driving style. We need to have a car that can deliver more performance and that is more suited to our drivers. (…)  He has all our support, we like having a good relationship with him and we hope we will have a good weekend. »

Tensions eased between Brown and Ricciardo?

Asked about his comments during the Monaco Grand Prix, where Daniel Ricciardo had been the target of criticism from his team director, Zak Brown plays the honesty card. “I was asked the question, I gave an honest answer. I believe Daniel said the same thing. We are here to try to move forward, we have had incredible weekends like at Monza and other more disappointing ones” Brown says. “We have a great relationship, I just gave an honest answer to what was going on. Things could go better, but we continue to work for it. »

According to Zak Brown, the Monaco storm has passed. From now on, a great sun shines on his relationship between him and the Australian pilot, which he considers better than ever. “We have a great relationship, we went to dinner together a few weeks ago in London. We had a good laugh and had a good time, in addition to enjoying working together. Our relationship with Daniel has never been better. »
