Engel and Mercedes on pole for the 24 2019 Hours of Nürburgring

Called “Top Qualifying” by the organizers, the final qualifying session used to determine the 28 best places ahead of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring (Germany) was particularly competitive. The drivers had two laps to set their times. Maro Engel (Mercedes) replied to Laurens Vanthoor (Porsche) by taking pole position, as in 2016.

The Team Black Falcon pilot responded to his Belgian opponent during his last attempt. Laurens Vanthoor, who was aiming for the pass of two after his 2018 pole, did not improve on its initial mark. Worse still, he was defeated by another Mercedes-AMG GT3, that of Maximilian Götz!

Despite the length of the Nordschleife (25 km), the gap between the two cars at l'Étoile is tiny: 137 thousandths. Frédéric Vervisch placed fourth in his Audi R8 LMS, an hour after the finish of WTCR Race 1.

Chosen by Frikadelli Racing to lead the Porsche 911 GT3 R in this session, the French Mathieu Jaminet gets away with the fifth time. His compatriot Frédéric Makowiecki (Porsche) sets the seventh fastest time.

One of only two Ferrari 488 GT3 of this Super Pole nestles in 10th place with Simon Tummer. The BMW M6 GT3, dominant in the Qualifying Race a few weeks earlier, returned to the ranks with 13th, 16th, 20th and 21st place. Frenchman Jordan Tresson (BMW) set the worst time in this session.

For its last appearance at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the Glickenhaus SCG 003C driven by Felipe Fernandez-Laser only set the 19th fastest time.

During this first year of operation of a new and complex calculation of times before this Super Pole, two important cars missed the top 28 window : the Audi R8 LMS of officials Markus Winkelhock, Christopher Haase, Marcel Fässler and René Rast, the Porsche 911 GT3 R of outgoing Adac GT Masters champion Robert Renauer and the BMW M6 GT3 of Jens Klingmann, Alexandre Imperatori, Peter Dumbreck and Step Dusseldorp.

The 24 2019 Hours of Nürburgring will begin at 15:30 p.m. on Saturday June 22 and will be followed via live video.
