Clearly, the rain will have disrupted the progress of the Coca Cola 600 until the end. Already postponed from Sunday to Monday due to bad weather, the longest race of the year could not be completed and was stopped after only 227 laps out of the 400 scheduled.
On the Charlotte ring, it was ultimately David Reutimann who won. Only 14th on the 221st lap when the rain started to fall, Reutimann only led for five laps in all. Betting to stay in the race while waiting for a possible red flag when the yellow flag was displayed, Reutimann was right when most of the drivers including Kyle Busch, the leader, had decided to refuel.
An option which paid off since a few laps later the race was definitively stopped. This success is the first for David Reutimann in the Sprint Cup but also for Michael Waltrip Racing. Behind, Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon, who had chosen the same option as the winner, took second and third place. Carl Edwards and Brian Vickers, who both changed two wheels under the yellow flag, finished fourth and fifth. Finally, Kyle Busch, who led for 173 laps, finally finished sixth.
Thanks to this victory, Reutimann moves back into 13th position in the general classification, just six points behind Mark Martin, twelfth and last qualified for the chase.
