Martin undergoing a makeover

At 50, Mark Martin has lost none of his motivation. This weekend, in Chicago, the veteran struck again. Starting in 14th position, the Batesville native still managed to lead for most of the race (195/267 laps). But it was a restart two laps from the end of the Illinois event that allowed him to take the advantage one last time over his rivals, notably Jeff Gordon. By gleaning this fourth success of the season, Mark Martin becomes the most prolific driver in 2009 and returns to the top 12 for the Chase, the race for the title.

Five-time champion Nascar, Jeff Gordon thought he would return to success, even though he remained three months (and twelve races) without a victory. But, far from being surprised at the last restart, two laps from the finish, Mark Martin got back on track most skilfully, overtaking Gordon as another victory eluded him. Still second in the standings, the latter remains firmly established in the leading group but would like to pile on the successes again, as the end of the season slowly looms. Mark Martin's victory could well be important in November.
