Denny Hamlin proved in Chicagoland (Illinois) that he had lost none of his competitiveness despite his leg injury. The pilot of the Toyota No. 11 offered Joe Gibbs Racing its eighth success in ten races by securing its second victory of the season after Martinsville (Tennessee) last March, the 16th of its career, which allows it to secure a place for the next round of the Chase, the “Contender Round”.
The winner made the difference by taking advantage of a good strategy from his team which made him keep his set of worn tires in order to take the lead during the last restart. Carl edwards ensured a double for Joe Gibbs by beating Kurt Busch (Stewart-Haas Racing), Ryan Newman (Richard Childress Racing) and Matt Kenseth (Joe Gibbs Racing).
On the other hand, the start of the Chase is more complicated for Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing). The defending champion finished second to last after hitting the wall following contact with Jimmie johnson (Hendrick Motorsports) who was able to continue to finish just outside the top ten.
