Death of Glen Wood, founder of Wood Brothers Racing

Glen Wood died this Friday at age 93. There Nascar is mourned by the death of the man who was the co-founder, with his brother Leonard, of Wood Brothers Racing.

This team founded in the 1950s is one of the oldest structures in the discipline. No less than 20 drivers out of the 50 in the “Hall of Fame” have passed through the hands of this famous team which has seen David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Curtis Turner and AJ Foyt pass through.

Glen Wood also defended the interests of his team, scoring four victories between 1960 and 1963 with a Ford chassis at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem (North Carolina). He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998.

While Wood Brothers Racing has scored 99 victories in the Nascar Cup Series out of 1546 starts, the team is famous for its revolutionary pit stop strategy that would conquer the entire discipline, and beyond. In 1965, the Lotus-Ford team called on the services of the WBR to compete in the Indy 500 with Jim Clark. The double world champion won by leading 190 of the 200 laps of the race.

Today, Wood Brothers Racing remains a mid-pack team, but it can still claim victory since its last success dates back to 2017 when Ryan Blaney won at Pocono (Pennsylvania).
