Nascar – Operational staff on race weekends limited in 2018

The governing bodies of the Nascar have announced a standardization of the number of people operating in teams for 2018 on race weekends. Concretely, each team / team will be forced to limit the number of its members working on a car. Here is the new distribution according to three levels defined by Nascar:

- Organizational team (Competition director, team managers, technical director, information technology specialists): In the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup, teams will be allocated three spots for one- and two-car teams, and four spots for three- and four-car teams. The XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series teams will each have one spot.

- “Preparation” team, Road Crew (Team leader, car manager, mechanics, engine tuners, engineers, specialists (tyres, aerodynamics, etc.), spotters): 12 people in Monster Energy Series, 7 in Xfinity and 6 in Camping World Trucks.

- Pit Stop Team, Pit Crew (This designation only concerns team members who perform an action beyond the wall during pit stops): The maximum number of people is five for all three series.

Exceptions will be made with an additional Road Crew spot in the Cup Series at Indianapolis and at the Sonoma, Watkins Glen and Charlotte road races. One additional spot in the Road Crew will be allowed for ten races in Xfinity and five events in Camping World Trucks.

The distribution among the teams will be left to the discretion of the teams, and the assemblies will be communicated to the public before each race weekend.

Since 2011, pit stop crews have included six people, up from seven previously. The new rules will notably see the fuel refueling attendant limited to this duty only.

« I think it's really positive, comments Steve O'Donnell, executive vice president of Nascar. Everyone obviously wants to see the race played out on the track, but everyone kept in mind that our goal is to make the race even better and allow more teams to win a race and be performing well in the stands.

So the idea of putting this in place has been very well received by the teams, but we obviously want to see this in action and make it a positive thing for our fans. »
