A racist gesture towards Bubba Wallace denounced by Nascar

Only African-American driver to race in Nascar, Bubba Wallace clearly doesn't just make friends. The 26-year-old athlete, who was preparing to race the Talladega (Alabama) event on Sunday June 22, discovered a hangman's rope in his Richard Petty Motorsports team garage. A racist act reminiscent of lynchings in the midst of a slave and segregationist society in the United States.

Committed to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, Bubba Wallace reacted vehemently on Twitter. “This despicable act of racism saddens me greatly. This serves as a painful reminder that we must go further as a society and how tenacious we must be in this fight against racism.

Over the past few weeks, I have been overwhelmed by the support from figures in the Nascar industry, including drivers and members of opposing teams. Together, our sport is committed to leading real change and championing a community accepted by all.

Nothing is more important than that and we will not be deterred by the unacceptable actions of those who only seek to spread hatred. As my mother said today (Sunday), "They're just trying to scare you." It won't break me, I won't give up, and I won't back down. I will continue to stand up for what I believe in. »

Nascar also released a press release to support Bubba Wallace. “We are furious and outraged, and cannot express strongly enough how seriously we take this act of hatred. We have launched an immediate investigation and will do everything we can to identify the person(s) responsible and remove them from our sport. There is no place for racism within Nascar”, added the organization.

The NBA star, LeBron James, finally gave his support to his compatriot. " It's disgusting. My brother Bubba Wallace, know that you are not alone. I am on your side and all the other athletes are. I just wanted to tell you again how proud I was of you for your desire to fight for change in the United States and in the world of sport."
