Nathanaël Berthon: “A great proof of confidence from Audi”

After a great 2020 WTCR season marked by a victory and three pole positions with Comtoyou Racing, do you consider this commitment by Audi as a reward?

Work with Audi began last year. Even though it was an old lady, the Audi RS3 has since been developed and we were able to get the most out of the package. Thanks to real teamwork – between the driver, the engineers and the mechanics – we have created great osmosis within Comtoyou Racing. With Audi, they wanted to keep this model which worked very well in 2020. During my career, I had already had several opportunities (to join the ranks of a major manufacturer. Editor's note) but it never really happened. materialized. I was a little unsatisfied, because I know I am capable of great things. It’s therefore great recognition and a great demonstration of confidence on the part of Audi. I hope I will be entrusted with other things in the future. I have of course informed Audi of my wish to participate again with them in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (in 2023. Editor’s note). But one thing at a time. I want to do a good job in WTCR first.

Does this mean that you could be entered into other races with Audi?

There may be other races in other disciplines, but my priority is WTCR. There is, for example, a conflict of dates between the 24 Hours of Spa and a WTCR round (in Adria, Italy, the weekend of July 31-August 1. Editor's note). I'm not going to sacrifice my season to go and ride in Belgium. But if there are other opportunities, I'll be ready.

Becoming a factory driver, at 31, what does that mean?

I must admit that it is very rewarding. This means that my qualities as a pilot and developer are recognized. I really like the development. This year we have a new car – the RS 3 LMS and part of its development is entrusted to me.
