Nürburgring Q2: Lamborghini ahead, HRT hits

Haupt Racing would have done well to be at the top of the bill like this. There Mercedes No. 2 hit the wall violently fifty minutes from the end of the second qualifying session for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Yelmer Buurman appears to have hit the guard rails on both sides and left a lot of debris on the track. The accident caused a red flag which signaled the end of the session with 40 minutes to spare.

The mechanics will have to surpass themselves to repair the car of Hupert Haupt, Nico Bastian and Gabriele Piana, which had nevertheless been one of the only cars to improve its time during the session. She was placed in sixth place, more than seven seconds behind the best time achieved in Q1.

In fact, there were no big improvements in this second session. Already, the rain fell with an hour to go. An evil ? Not really. It was even a blessing for the teams who were able to test tires and settings in conditions expected during the race. The weather forecast calls for showers, therefore dry moments and soggy moments, all with a temperature below ten degrees throughout the race.

Then the accident happened. In the end, the Konrad Motorsport Lamborghini driven in particular by Franck Perera and Marco Mapelli remains at the top of the timesheet with its 8'11''428 four seconds ahead of the No. 5 Phoenix Racing Audi driven by Vincent Kolb, Mike Rockenfeller, Richard Westbrook and Frank Stippler. The No. 3 Haupt Racing Mercedes completes the leading trio thanks to Adam Christodoulou, Maro Engel, Luca Stolz and Manuel Metzger.

The first five times are the same as in Q1. Behind the Haupt Racing Mercedes, the No. 29 official Audi of Mattia Drudi, René Rast, Kelvin Van der Linde and Christopher Mies also improved to reach seventh place.

A third qualification will take place on Friday at 13:25 p.m. and a “Top qualification” will determine pole at 16:40 p.m.
