SRO specifies the format of its Blancpain GT World Challenge

The last part of Stéphane Ratel's press conference in Barcelona, on the sidelines of the Blancpain GT Series final Endurance Cup, was devoted to the detail of the famous Blancpain GT World Challenge, that the boss of SRO Motorsports had started to sketch during the 24 Hours of Spa last July.

Scheduled to reward above all the best customer program of a brand involved in the SRO series around the world, this GT World Challenge will be based on 18 races, taking up the calendars of the current sprint championships which are the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup, the Blancpain GT Series Asia and the Pirelli World Challenge.

Now called Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe, Asia and America, these series will offer points to the twelve drivers (four per continent) nominated by manufacturers wishing to compete for the challenge.

All categories of drivers must be represented by each manufacturer on the three continents, namely Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze, who will accumulate points on each event contested.

This number of units will be multiplied by the number of drivers on the grid to ensure a certain balance between championships with more or less full starting grids and categories.

The 2019 calendar will include the five races of the Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe, six of the Asia Challenge and seven of the American portion according to the following format:

Circuit of the Americas: March 2-3
Sepang (Asia): April 6-7
VIRginia International Raceway (America): April 27-28
Brands Hatch (Europe): May 4-5
Buriram (Asia): May 11-12
Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (America): May 18-19
Red Bull Ring (Europe): May 24-26
Sonoma (America): June 8-9
Suzuka (Asia): June 22-23
Misano (Europe): June 28-30
Fuji (Asia): July 6-7
Yeongam (Asia): August 3-4
Watkins Glen (America): August 31-September 1
Budapest (Europe): September 6-8
Shanghai (Asia): September 21-22
Road America: September 21-22
Barcelona (Europe): September 27-28
Grand Finale (America): October 19-20

Stéphane Ratel indicated during this presentation that three manufacturers involved would already be a good thing, without dreaming of having ten in the first season.
