C2 – Tarquini opportunistic winner in Marrakech, two French people on the podium

The veteran (57 years old!) took advantage of the accident of Nicky Catsburg (Hyundai) on the 10th lap. Until this moment, the Dutchman from BRC Hyundai N Lukoil Racing Team was firmly in control of the race. Starting from pole thanks to the reverse grid system, the former official Lada and Volvo driver in the WTCC took care of his car, until suddenly leaving the track when braking. On his Twitter account, Nicky Catsburg claims brake failure.

His Hyundai i30 N, badly damaged at the front, should not be able to start Race 3.

Gabriele Tarquini then brought his experience to bear during the neutralization. His closest rival, Jean Karl Vernay (Audi), was barely a second behind before the Safety Car appeared. However, when the race resumed its rights, the gap had increased to two full seconds! It should be noted that the outgoing WTCR by Oscaro champion did not wait for the Safety Car to disappear before returning to normal…

Apart from these two incidents, the race was very calm. The podium is completed by Yann Erlacher (Lynk & Co). The Alsatian jumped when the lights went out the winner of the first round on Saturday Esteban Guerrieri (Honda).

Debutant Mikel Azcona (Cupra) asserts himself with a good fifth place, ahead of Cyan Racing representatives Thed Björk and Yvan Muller. The fourth Frenchman hired, Aurelien Panis (Cupra), battled from last place to finish 21st.

The disappointment continues for the Volkswagen clan, which scores no points. The star of the Moroccan public Mehdi Benanni gave up again after a collision with one of his teammates.

Race 3 is scheduled for 19:15 p.m. French time.
