Waters on provisional pole, Van Gisbergen penalized

Bathurst Week 2022 will be a landmark in Australian Supercars history. Certainly the “Great Race” has already been contested in delicate weather conditions, it would seem that this year, all rainfall records will be broken. Since the free practice sessions, many have been trapped by the track conditions made delicate by the incessant rain. Many pilots made mistakes by aquaplaning on the wet tarmac. Championship leader Shane Van Gisbergen also went to test the edges of Mount Panorama. Bathurst is a complicated circuit in the dry, we'll let you imagine when rivers flow everywhere. The four free sessions established a reliable hierarchy allowing one or more favorites to stand out from the crowd. In this little game, two teams stood out: Dick Johnson Racing (best time in sessions 1 and 3) and Triple Eight Engineering (best time in sessions 2 and 4).

Cameron Waters (Tickford racing) and his teammate James Moffat blew hot and cold during free practice. They finished 13th, 10th, 2nd and 12th respectively in these four sessions. These results did not predict the performance of Waters in qualifying who managed to take pole position after a great battle throughout the session with Chaz Mostert (walkinshaw Andretti United), Shane Van Gisbergen (Triple Eight), Lee Holdsworth (Whole grained Racing) and Will Davison (Dick Johnson Racing). Great performance from the returning Richie Stanaway (Erebus Motorsport) who places his Commodore 5th in the session, to the great pleasure of his teammate the legendary Greg Murphy (four-time winner of the event

Van Gisbergen sows chaos

At the end of the session, the championship leader made an error of judgment and a disagreement with Macauley Jones sent the Brad Jones Racing Commodore into the wall. Jones' Holden is particularly damaged, the race management considers that SvG should have contained his maneuver. As a result, the #97 Holden will move back three places on the starting grid on Sunday morning. Next important meeting for the competitors of the Bathurst 1000 kilometers, the Top 10 shoot-out to decide the final starting grid for this 65th edition.
