“Crazy”, “Great”, “A great idea” ? There was no shortage of words for the pilots to describe their feelings when the information was announced. The WTCC World Touring Car Championship will stop in Germany on the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours track, the famous Green Hell. The race should take place on the sidelines of the German double round, the 2014 edition of which will take place this weekend. Therefore, nearly 26 km and 157 turns will lie ahead of the participants.
“It will be a nightmare for me, because I am too old to remember all this. » jokes Gabriele Tarquini, official Honda driver. For his part, the leader of the championship, the Argentinian Jose Maria Lopez indicates that error will not be allowed. “If you miss your first turn in qualifying, you will have to repeat the 26 km to try your luck again! »
For the organizers, the sporting regulations will have to be reviewed. “It will be the peak of the season, explains François Ribeiro, Director of Motorsport Development at Eurosport Events. The idea is to organize a single 120 km race (i.e. five turns), with a pit stop. Details of this race will be discussed between the FIA, Eurosport and the teams before the next WTCC commission. Then, a proposal will be sent to the World Motor Sport Council for approval. The pilots in any case are excited. »
For Hans-Joachim Stuck, boss of the DMSB (the equivalent of the FFSA across the Rhine), “The WTCC finally returns to Germany (which has not happened since 2011, Editor's note), and I'm delighted. I can't wait to see the drivers compete on this track. »
