Alexander Sims on pole again for Race 2 in Riyadh

Alexander Sims (BMW i Andretti) is definitely the strongest in the qualifying exercise in Saudi Arabia. The Briton dominated qualifying for the second race of the weekend, as was already the case yesterday in race 2. It is also his third pole in a row after that of race 2 in New York last July.

The group stages saw Lucas di Grassi (Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler) prove to be the fastest, with the drivers in the first group not being able to set the same pace as those later in the session.

Qualified for the decisive phase, di Grassi, Sébastien Buemi (Nissan e.dams), Mitch Evans (Jaguar Racing), Alexander Sims (BMW i Andretti), Jérôme d'Ambrosio (Mahindra Racing) and Antonio Felix da Costa (DS Techeetah) were going to battle for pole, which ultimately came back to Alexander Sims, author of the reference time in 1'11″476.

The Briton, with a constant attack, is ahead of Buemi by 0, with di Grassi more than three tenths behind. Mitch Evans will accompany the Brazilian on the second row when d'Ambrosio and Felix da Costa, guilty of an error in his turn when he seemed able to improve the reference.

Winner yesterday in race 1, Sam Bird (Virgin Racing) fails at the gates of Super Pole in seventh position, and precedes Edoardo Mortara (Venturi Racing), Max Günther (BMW i Andretti) and the first Porsche 9XX by André Lotterer.

Reigning champion, Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah) had a tricky start to the day in Saudi Arabia, with contact with the wall in FP3 and only 11th place in this qualifying session. The Frenchman will finally have to start from the back of the grid after being penalized for changing the battery, a consequence of his contact with the wall. The Frenchman will also have to observe a 10-second penalty during the race.

Disappointment in the clan Mercedes, since neither Stoffel Vandoorne, on the podium of race 1 yesterday, nor Nyck de Vries, were unable to reach the Super Pole, the two drivers finishing 12th and dead last.
