Alvaro Parente on pole at Spa

Nico Hulkenberg will not be GP2 Series champion this weekend. The possibility was slim but real if the German driver had had a perfect weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, and counting on a zero point from Vitaly Petrov. But, by failing to score the two points for pole position, the German driver can already put aside this possibility and concentrate on his races this weekend.

It was Alvaro Parente who set the best time, moving to the head of the peloton at the very end of the session. The 2007 Formula champion Renault 3.5 Series, winner of a race last season in GP2 with Super Nova Racing, is in the best position to achieve a second success. In addition, he offers Ocean Racing Technology its first pole position, and will have to try to contain Lucas di Grassi (Racing Engeneeirng) and Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix) at the start.

Behind the three leaders, we find Diego Nunes (iSport) and Vitaly Petrov (Barwa Addax), who failed to win the first race in Valencia last weekend. On the French side, after the departure of Romain Grosjean for the paddocks of Formula 1, we look gloomy. The two French players on the field, Nelson Panciatici and Franck Perera, bring up the rear in 23rd and 24th positions. Perera, who exceeded 107% of the best time, is expected not to participate in the race. As for Luis Razia and Andreas Zuber (Team Coloni), they were unable to participate in qualifying, their cars having been immobilized (see elsewhere). Start of the first race Saturday at 16 p.m.
